True North Man

Apr 5, 2021

Ryan Hawk became a student of leadership at a young age. Benefiting from what he calls the “exceptional” leadership of both his high school football coaches and parents, he understood that an exceptional leader has the power to transform lives for the better.

“When you see that a person can have that type of impact, I became much more curious about learning from other leaders in my life,” he says. “That curiosity has driven me to try to learn more and more, ultimately intending to impact other people and help them perform at levels that maybe they don’t think they’re capable of.”

Learning is a crucial emphasis for Ryan. He is, after all, host of The Learning Leader Podcast, as well as a leadership coach and author. It’s his ultimate goal to, as he puts it, become a “learning machine” that can inspire others to elevate their own goals. And although he’s been in the leadership coaching business for years, he doesn’t consider that goal achieved yet. That’s because a true leader has “never arrived but is always becoming,” he says.

In this episode of True North Man, Paul and Ryan discuss working on yourself as a leader and defining your leadership legacy.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The four-part framework for more effective leadership that Ryan developed
  • Why good leaders are constantly “fueling their intake engines.”
  • The difference between leading yourself and leading others
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“There are leaders within businesses who have a title and think they’re leaders because of who they are. But really, they’re followed and complied with because of their title. And so I want to go beyond the title and become the type of leader that others choose to commit to because that’s what true leadership is: when people can choose to follow anyone, and they choose to follow you.”
